Dr. Gleeson has been based at the University of Western Australia in the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences since 2004. She completed her PhD and early postdoctoral work at University College Dublin before coming to UWA as a visiting researcher, and subsequently as a research staff member. Her research focuses on how the diversity and function of microorganisms are impacted by their environment – this includes both natural and managed ecosystems. She has successfully obtained funding for her work from the Grains Research and Development Corporation, the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources as well as the Australian Research Council. She specialises in using the latest molecular biology technologies to assess microbial communities in terms of their structure, composition, abundance and function. She currently runs a large agricultural project within the National Soil Carbon Program, has led the establishment of the first Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) in the Southern hemisphere in collaboration with Dr. Matthias Leopold and is currently working to improve bioremediation effectiveness of hydrocarbon contaminated land in challenging environments.
